Wow! Thanks to all of you for the great potluck. I really seemed like everyone had a great time and I know we were all fed well. I really enjoyed hearing what everyone has been up to.
Starting tomorrow, we have some organized plans. Please let me know or write in the comment section if you have questions or suggestions.
Monday: Several of the students want to go bowling. Audrey Kossayian said to meet at her house by 1:00 (unless you just want to meet at the bowling alley--Edgewood Bowl by Goodwill). Her address is: 6911 Rolling Ridge Ct, SW. Text if you need directions or have questions about anything (319-450-5020). They will head back out to her house after bowling, unless you have made other arrangements.
Tuesday: Coral Ridge Mall for shopping. Again, meet at the Kossayian house by 1:00 and she will drive down from their. Melanie will also be driving that day so let one of us know if you need a ride.
Wednesday: Coe College Tour If you need a ride, meet in front of the cafeteria at 9:15. The Coe tour starts at 10:00. If you will be meeting us there, be at the Nassif building by 10:00. The tour lasts a little over an hour and then we will eat in the college cafeteria. My contact person is checking on the price of lunch. It is normally $8.00. She is going to see if the German students can eat for free. I will know that by Tuesday sometime.
After we eat, Steve suggested that we go to Goodwill on Blair's Ferry. This is a 2nd hand shop. After that, we can make some other plans. There is a lot to do on that side of town. We will be back to school by 4:00. Let us know if you will need a ride home.
Thursday: Lake McBride. I would like to hear from the students how long they would like to be there. I would like to have everyone back to school by 4:00. We can meet at school. I would suggest about 11:00 or so. I also need to know who all can drive.
I suggest that you pack a lunch and snacks for your student and that they bring spending money for extra snacks and renting a paddle boat. Students will be dropped off at the High School before 4:00.
At night on Thursday: We are not planning this as a group, but Magui just called me to let me know that her boyfriend and several other boys from school have been invited to play baseball against some Japanese baseball players. (My friend Julie who teachers Japanese at Wash is in charge of finding homes for the Japanese players). Magui is going to send me all the information and I will post it here. I think it would be a lot of fun to go to a good ol' American baseball game.
Friday: There are no group plans on any of these days. In the past, some families have put together little get togethers at their homes. This can be a lot of fun. (I would love to have some sort of party on the Sunday before they leave. If there is someone who is willing to host, please let me know. It doesn't have to be anything big, just a time for us to be together and celebrate our new friendships.)
Extra Info that I already know:
Friday Aug 21st is Sophomore Orientation day. There are many 10th graders hosting and PLEASE bring your student with. If you are staying with someone who doesn't have to go that day, but you would like to go to school, let me or Frau Bürklen know and we will make sure you have a ride to and from school.
Monday Aug 24th: First day of school. The German exchange students should go to school and shadow you through your day. I will let school know. Judy in the school store is always great about letting your German student use your account number to get a school lunch.
Tuesday Aug 25th: Frau Bürklen and I will make a schedule for the exchange students to spend time in my classes. They don't have to be with me all day, but I want to make sure that each of my classes have a chance to meet them and ask questions.
Wednesday Aug 26: So sad!!! Today is the day our new family members must fly home. I believe that we must meet at the airport at about 9:00. I will have the specific information for you closer to this date.
